EDC Flashlights: Fenix PD36R Pro vs. Olight ArkPro vs. Streamlight ProTac 2L-X

Published

Everyday-carry flashlights are sold on peak lumens, but peak output rarely lasts more than a few minutes. We compare a 21700 high-output light, a flat multi-function light and a CR123A tactical light on the specs that decide how they behave in the pocket and in use.

vibeThe output king. The biggest battery and the longest throw here, at the cost of size and weight. The multi-tool of light. Flat, pocket-friendly and the only one with UV and a laser, but with a proprietary battery. The duty classic. Simple tail-switch operation and the option to run on CR123A cells you can buy anywhere.

Lumens, Candela and Why Turbo Is a Sprint

A flashlight’s lumen rating is total light output. Candela is how concentrated that light is in the brightest part of the beam, and it decides how far the light reaches. The Fenix PD36R Pro leads on both: 2,800 lumens and 36,600 cd from a large Luminus SFT70 LED, which works out to a 380-metre beam. The Streamlight ProTac 2L-X is far less powerful at 500 lumens, but Streamlight’s runtimes describe a light that holds its high mode for hours rather than minutes.

That difference matters because most high-output lights cannot sustain their peak. Fenix notes that the PD36R Pro’s Turbo runtime includes time at reduced output once the temperature protection steps in. Olight lists the ArkPro’s flood Turbo as about four minutes at full output before it steps down. For walking the dog or checking a car engine, the High or Medium mode you will actually use is a better guide than the headline number.

The ArkPro is the odd one out. It is a flat light, closer to a pocket knife than a tube, and adds a 365 nm UV emitter and a green laser pointer to the white LEDs. The cost is a proprietary built-in cell: when the battery wears out, you cannot swap in a standard one.

How to Read Flashlight Specs

Which One Should You Choose?

Before You Buy

Green laser pointers are regulated in some countries and should never be aimed at people, vehicles or aircraft. Specs above come from the makers’ and authorized retailers’ listings; runtimes are the manufacturers’ figures.
